Born in Kirkland, WA and claiming hometown in Big Bear, CA, Ryan attended Big Bear H.S. before Stanford University. He was touted as one of the top high school runners in the country coming out of high school, graduating the same year as elites Alan Webb and Dathan Ritzenhein.
