National Health Through Fitness Day

by Sharon Day-Monroe

I was incredibly honored and nervous to be chosen to support an important cause such as National Health Through Fitness Day. I think that physical fitness and health are incredibly important for all people, adults and children alike. So to be able to advocate for health and fitness for all Americans to have access and less barriers to healthy living is important to me. The physical education program is vital for young children to be put on a path to healthy living. Without PE in schools we are doing the children of america a disservice.

Continued federal funding allows kids access to physical education they may not otherwise get and are part of the building blocks to a healthy life. I was nervous about meeting with members of congress and how it would go or what I would say. When it came down to it, it was easy to share my stories of being an athlete and how important PE and physical activity was to my life as a child and how I believe that shaped my future. I hope that my testimony influenced them to see the importance of physical activity for everyone.

Overall it was a great experience, it was fun, it was informative, and it was something that I hope to be able to do again.
