Born in Hazel Crest, IL, Melissa attended Marian Catholic High School. Following a successful prep campaign in Illinois, Melissa brought her talents to the University of Oregon, where she earned a degree in Human Physiology with a minor in Biology. Finishing in just 3 years, Melissa began a graduate program in clinical exercise physiology in the fall of her 4th year and completed her Master of Science degree in 2012.

Melissa had an accessory bone in each of her ankles, a condition known as Os Trigonum. She had surgery in 2011 to remove the extra bone from her take off leg (left). She has also had 2 stress fractures.
