Athlete Bio
Gabriele Grunewald
Born and raised in Minnesota, Gabriele (better known as Gabe) attended Perham H.S. in the small-town of Perham prior to the University of Minnesota, where she earned a degree in English and Political Science and an advanced degree in Public Policy. Following a single-state title in high school, Gabe was a walk-on for the Golden Gophers, but through a steady career, she flourished to become an All-American and school record holder in the 1500 meters. Gabe's hard-work on the track continues to pay off, as she took the 2014 USA Indoor Championship in the 3000 meters with her signature dangerous finishing kick.
Gabe is as inspiring for her life off the track as she is on. As a young cancer survivor, Gabe faces the difficulty for being more well-known as a cancer survivor than a great runner, but recognizes the importance to share her story and hopefully inspire others to pursue their dreams and continue to live a great life, even after going through major adversity. She loves living and training in her homestate of Minnesota, even through the challenge of being a professional runner throughout all four seasons in Minneapolis, but it is one she gladly embraces in order to be close to friends, family, and of course, the lakes. Traveling the world has made her love Minnesota even more. Gabe's passion for cancer survivorship led her to start the non-profit Brave Like Gabe, which raises funding for rare cancer research.
