Where I’ve Been

Hey everybody!

I want to open up a bit about where I’ve been. These past couple of years I have been caught in an injury cycle – caught in that constant push to get back into form, and wouldn’t give my body the time it needed to recover or build the appropriate amount of base to race at a high level. It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, and that’s certainly what I’ve been doing.

This build up is going to be different. I will give my body the full time and care it deserves and enjoy the process. I also will start sharing more of my journey – being open on social media will help keep me accountable to both myself and the running community. This summer I have gotten to know the local, NYC running scene more and realize how helpful it is to be apart of an open running community, where we share with each other the ups and downs of the journey.

So to everyone starting a new school year, training cycle, or to those already knee-deep in both, let’s go and #justdoit

Mary, aren’t you the smarty-pants. It took me 20 years to learn the lessons you’re learning already. When I was done learnin’ I was too old to do anything but enjoy the journey (now physically 76, mentally 15). Godspeed!

I went through an injury cycle myself around your age, Mary, but I got through it and so will you. Sports medicine and training (looking good with the squat bar!) is much more advanced than it was back then, but more importantly you already have the wisdom and maturity to back off and take the long view. You have many, many years of top-flight competition in front of you!
