When news broke that David Torrence passed away, I couldn’t believe it. He JUST reached out to me on my birthday a few days ago. I was looking forward to returning to Phoenix next week and listening to his crazy stories during our runs together. David made everyone in our training group laugh. His intensity during workouts was unmatched. It made all of us want to work harder. I remember staring at him in awe during some of his sessions and thinking to myself, “This guy is crazy!” But that’s what made David so good. He was a fierce competitor who truly just loved to run. He wanted to see all of us do well, always cheering us on and never hesitant to help pace us through intervals.
I witnessed David’s selflessness early on in our friendship. When I was hospitalized in January, he came to visit me with a bag full of snacks and magazines. I didn’t know David well then, but that didn’t stop him from sitting with me for a few hours just to keep me company. David loved to spend time with others and have fun. He organized weekly game nights during which his competitive nature definitely came to light!
I wish I would have said thank you to David more. Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for always lending a helping hand. Thank you for being the charismatic, dedicated, sincere person that you were. I will cherish the time we spent together forever.
If you don’t take anything else from this post, take this: Tomorrow is not promised. Love others. Tell your friends and family how much they mean to you. Chase after your dreams. Live your life to the fullest. Live each day likes it’s your last. Live like David Torrence did <3.
