Born and raised in southern California, Barbara attended University High School in Los Angeles where she was a jane-of-all-trades. She ran the sprints from 100m to 400m, hurdled, competed in the high jump, and ran cross country all 4 years. After high school, she attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, and while earning a degree in Sociology, Barbara focused her talent for various specialties to the Heptathlon her sophomore year.
