Born and raised in Tennessee, Alex attended La Vergne High School outside of Nashville. While at La Vergne, Alex was a three-time letterman in both track and football, and would win a state title in the shot put, in addition to setting the school record in the event. After high school, Alex's first stop was at Gardner-Webb University, where he would set school records in the weight throw, shot put, and discus en route to scoring two Big South championships, one each in the weight throw and hammer.
